Sedbergh - England's Book Town - the story

Hawes

The town of Hawes is a thriving market town nestled in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Hawes is about 25 minutes from Sedbergh, in Cumbria. Map of journey. Hawes lies between the fells Buttertubs and Fleet Moss and the name Hawes, literally means a 'pass between the mountains'.

Hawes is home to Wensleydale Cheese and the Dales Countryside Museum. There are several craft workshops, antique and other speciality shops dotted around the town. There are also plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafés so you'll never need to go too far for a drink and a bite to eat.

Hawes is famous for its Wensleydale Creamery and it is the only maker of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese in the world. The Creamery is situated in Hawes, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A great day out can be had at the visitors centre where you can see the staff make the cheese and then purchase some in the specialist cheese shop afterwards. A must for cheese lovers and Wallace & Gromit fans!

Also of interest is the Hawes Ropemakers. Established in 1905 and set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Hawes Ropemakers make all kinds of rope: barrier ropes, bannister ropes, dog leads, skipping ropes, clothes line and equestrian ropes. It's certainly an interesting day out for all the family.

Hawes is a quaint town in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. A real 'must see' if you're staying in Sedbergh as it is only about 24 minutes away on the A684.
