There are three main towns situated around the lake: Ambleside, Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere.
The village of Windermere is found one mile inland uphill from the lake. It is a fantastic place to visit if you are on holiday. With it's own rail link and bus terminals, you are never too far away from the mountains and lakes, but near to all major attractions. Windermere is a centre for watersports and climbing enthusiasts, but for the more relaxed visitor it also offers charming shops, pubs and restaurants to while away the day.
Some of the many superb attractions, such as the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole and the Windermere Steamboat Museum are definately worth your time. There are walks to suit all abilities, ranging from lakeside strolls to energetic hikes up the fells, and the opportunities for outdoor activities are endless, from swimming and canoeing to water skiing and sailing.
Ambleside is situated at the northern point of Windermere. There have been many well-known people associated with Ambleside, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter and there are many places for you to visit to learn more about them. The Beatrix Potter Gallery is a great day out for all Peter Rabbit fans!

The town of Ambleside is a great place to visit and has become somewhat of a tourist resort now. This means that there are shops, hotels and restaurants aplenty, and it is a great place to explore the Lake District from.
The town of Bowness-on-Windermere is found by the shore of Windermere. It is a massively popular tourist destination with the town busy for most of the year. With Victorian-influenced buildings adding architectural beauty to the town, and the naturally beautiful views out onto Windermere, it's no wonder that Bowness is such a popular place to visit.

Something not to be missed os 'The World of Beatrix Potter' in the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. This is a magical recreation of Beatrix Potters books, where you can meet Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-duck and all the characters in the famous stories. A great day out for families.
