Sedbergh - England's Book Town - the story

Fells

One of the main attractions for people visiting Sedbergh, is the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. The Howgill fells provide a breathtaking backdrop for this picturesque town. And being part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and near to the Lake District National Park is a bonus for visitors.

Winder is the fell that you can see towering over Sedbergh and the climb to the 1551 ft. (473 m.) top of Winder is a very popular walk from the town. Once at the summit (on a clear day) there are splendid views of the Lake District hills, the Shap Fells, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lune Valley stretching down to Morecame Bay.

The Calf (the highest point of the Howgills), Uldale Head and the Langdale fell (not the Langdale Pikes in the Lake District) are all part of the Howgill fells too as well as many others.. The Calf has one of England's highest waterfalls, cascading from it - Cautley Spout. The Calf and the waterfall are just north of Sedbergh.

There are many walks to go on around Sedbergh. The Howgill fells are quite spectacular and if you are after some peace and quiet, as well as stunning views, then the Howgills are the answer. The wilderness of the fells, presence of wild ponies and the reward of the view when you get to the peak, are just fantastic.

It's no wonder that many of the visitors we get coming to Sedbergh are walking enthusiasts, eager to trek up the fells that are such a wonderful natural feature of this part of the country.
