Sedbergh, in the Yorkshire Dales and near to the Lake District, has a wide variety of shops. Locals can find most things they need here and visitors can while away many an hour perusing the local antique shops and book shops - of which there are many with us now being England's national Book Town.
The local convenience shops consist of Nisa - the newsagents, and the Spar. There is also the greengrocers - Powells, where you can find fresh produce and a range of delicatessen products, as well as local award-winning jams and pickles. There is also an open air market every Wednesday, and a "Local Produce and Farmers Market" on the second Wednesday of every month.
Garth Steadman is the owner of Steadmans butchers on Finkle Street. Steadmans has been established in Sedbergh for the past forty-six years. Anyone who enters Steadmans is treated to a friendly and personal service for which they are well-known throughout the town. They offer a huge range of different meats and other products and are always willing to go the extra mile for better service.
Sedbergh was named England's Book Town in May 2006 and as such has seen book shops spring up left, right and centre! The biggest is Westwood Books just at the beginning of Long Lane. It has a stock of over 70,000 titles - antiquarian, secondhand, and new books (mostly at reduced prices). Ground coffee is available and there is also a comfortable seating area, so you can relax and browse at your leisure.
Sedbergh Soap Company is a family business and part of a working sheep & cattle farm at the foot of the Howgill Fells. The soap is not tested on animals and has wonderful fresh smell that comes from the 100% pure essential oils. The natural colours come from the organic herbs and plants that are grown on the farm. A present of Sedbergh Soap is a unique gift for anyone and the company's website ensures that knowledge of their brilliant product has now spread far beyond the local Farmers Market.
